Bank Holiday on a budget: Tips and tricks

Posted on: August 21, 2017

Then next long weekend, summer bank holiday, is fast approaching. Whether you’re planning a weekend away, or you’re craving a lie in, it’s important to make the most of it. This year, why not do something fun without spending much money? Here’s what we’ve come up with:

Try a free festival

You’re spoilt for choice with the number of free and cheap festivals taking place over the bank holiday weekend. Notting Hill Carnival is a great choice, as it’s an open event, suitable for the whole family (Sunday is known as ‘Family Day’). You’ll be able to enjoy a great weekend in a Caribbean style atmosphere, with a parade of stylish costumes and stage performances. Alternatively, you could check out the Festival of Love, Southbank’s summer-themed event, where your kids can enjoy a range of activities.

Get cultured

Maybe it’s time you experienced some culture and history on your bank holiday. There’s loads of free museums around the UK, that are worth visiting. There’s the big hitters like the National History Museum and Tate Modern in London. If you live near Manchester, perhaps you could check out the People’s History Museum. If you’re based in the South West, the Arnolfini is a fantastic arts centre and gallery in Bristol. Glasgow’s Hunterian is a great museum for anyone based in Scotland. Depending on where you live, they’ll be plenty of local museums to get your culture fix.

Go for a bike ride

One sure-fire way to stay productive on your day off is by going for a bike ride. Why not take the family and explore new roads and pathways? There’s plenty of well-ridden tracks and scenic paths, if you’re unsure of where exactly to ride. It’s simple, saddle up and get active!

Have a picnic

Why not pack a picnic basket for a family day out? Hopefully, the weather will be good enough. In any case, it’s the cheapest way to get a bite to eat, and an ideal way to enjoy your lunch in a relaxing and fun environment that all the family can enjoy.
